about me
I’m Tom Bell and I live in Ramsgate, Kent in the UK. I’m a big geek and I love technology.
I’m currently a network engineer working for Kent County Council. More specifically I work for EIS which is a unit within KCC that supports schools for IT. Even more specifically I work in the team that supports the broadband connections for schools that are connected to the County Council’s private WAN.
I’ve loved IT since I first used a PC at secondary school. I love the power that technology brings. In my work now I try to ensure that that power is leveraged effectively for the people that want to use the services that we provide. From my time as a (bad) software developer I enjoyed the enablement I brought to the people I wrote software for. That desire to enable people is still with me now. In my new interests of networking and security I combine two perspectives: a wish to enable people to do whatever they please, and a sense of protection, minimising risk for the users. Users need protecting now, more than ever.
I’m intrinsicly motivated to do things as best they can possibly be done, I just don’t believe in doing things anything less than completely. I have (an irritating, I’m sure colleagues might tell you!) eye for detail and perfection which helps drive me.
I’m more than happy to be contacted by anyone for any reason. My email address is tom@channeltom.com.
